Starting with a personal trainer can feel like a big step — especially if you’ve been away from exercise for a while, or you’re not sure what it will involve.
You might be wondering:
Will I be pushed too hard?
Do I need to be fit already?
Will I feel out of place?
Will it be like a gym or bootcamp?
Those are completely normal questions.
In reality, starting personal training is usually much simpler — and much more comfortable — than people expect.
Here’s how it usually works.
How clients usually find me
Most of my clients come to me by word of mouth — a friend, family member, or health professional who knows my approach and thought I'd be a good fit. If that's how you found this page, welcome. If you're just starting to look, I'd love the chance to show you what one-to-one, careful, tailored training looks like.
Finding the right approach
Personal trainers have quite different approaches and areas of expertise. Some focus on high-intensity bootcamp or HIIT-style training, while others specialise in helping people who are returning to exercise, managing injuries, or simply want a more careful, individual approach. It’s good to chat with a prospective trainer to find out their particular approach and find someone who will suit your needs.
My approach is careful and tailored to your current ability. I'm more interested in helping you find an approach you can enjoy and stick with. Once you're exercising comfortably and consistently, we can gradually add more challenge as your confidence and ability grow.
Where will you train?
I work from a private home studio in Maungaraki, where every session is one-to-one. It's a quiet, comfortable environment where we can focus entirely on you, your goals, and your progress.
Your programme is tailored to your current ability, so you can build confidence and progress at a pace that feels right for you.
First call to a personal trainer
You start with an initial call where you discuss why you would like a trainer to help you. Some goals may be:
Lose weight
Become stronger
Reduce back or joint pain
Improve confidence
Keep up with family
Recover after injury
In our first conversation, we’ll talk about how I can help you, and whether my approach feels like a good fit. We can also go over practical things like session options and your budget.
If you decide to continue, I’ll usually ask you to complete a simple Health, Lifestyle, and Goals questionnaire before we meet for a consultation.
The questionnaire helps me to:
keep you safe
create a programme that will get you the results you want
understand your current ability and circumstances so I can tailor a programme that's realistic, enjoyable, and gives you the best chance of long-term success.
Consultation
The consultation is usually much more relaxed than people expect. Rather than putting you through a hard workout, we'll spend time talking about your goals, your current situation, and any concerns you may have.
It's also an opportunity for us to get to know each other and see whether we feel we'll work well together. Together, we'll put together a realistic plan.
Many people leave the consultation feeling much more confident because they can see a clear path forward. They realise that their goals—whether that's losing weight, becoming stronger, reducing pain, or improving fitness—are achievable with the right plan and support.
By the end of the consultation, we'll usually have worked out:
your goals
a realistic timeframe
how your programme will work
how often you'll train
any special considerations or concerns we need to take into account
I'll also guide you through some simple movements and exercises so I can better understand how your body moves. This helps me understand your current ability, identify the exercises that are likely to help you most, and make any adjustments needed so you can exercise comfortably, confidently, and safely.
Using everything we've discussed and seen together, I'll then put together a programme that's designed specifically for you, giving you the best chance of exercising safely, building confidence, and achieving your goals.
First Day of exercise (The start of the journey)
The next time we get together will be your first training session. At your first session, I’ll take you through a programme designed for you — at a pace that feels manageable. We'll adjust anything that needs changing so the programme feels comfortable, achievable, and right for you.
I will normally explain what the exercises do and what benefits they have, and will help you refine how you perform each exercise to get the most out of each movement and minimise risk of injury.
Ongoing (The journey)
During the sessions that follow, I'll continue to guide you and help you progress at a pace that works for you.
Everyone is different, so there's no single right way to continue. Some people enjoy coming two or three times a week, while others prefer one session each week. Others become confident exercising on their own and simply come back from time to time to review their progress, refine their technique, and update their programme.
Together, we'll find an approach that suits your goals, your lifestyle, and your budget.
Still not sure if personal training is right for you? A no-pressure chat is often the best place to start. I'd be happy to answer your questions and help you decide whether we're a good fit.
